The South Pole of the Moon is actually really interesting. There are a lot of deep craters, some of which never get any sunlight at the bottom. Spacecraft have had a look in these craters and found ice in them, which stays frozen thanks to the lack of Sun. However the tops of the walls of some of the craters are the opposite- they have Sun all the time. So it would be a really good place to put a moonbase: constant Sun for energy at the top and water at the bottom.
