The parasite I work on, toxoplasma, infects up to 30% of all of the people in the UK. But it almost never makes us sick, our immune systems protect us and the parasite is quite happy to hide away in our muscles or our brains, not really doing anything.
The way we find out if people have toxoplasma is by a blood test, we look for special proteins called antibodies in the blood and if they are there, then we know the person has been infected.
This is for my parasite but there are lots of things that can make us sick and there are lots of ways doctors can use to find out what is making you sick. I hope that this helped!
